Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Luke 6:21
Whoa, what kind of request was this of Jesus to make? Doesn’t He know how badly I was hurt? Doesn’t He understand how badly I still hurt? Am I a door mat? Am I worthless? Do my feelings mean nothing to God? Why should someone get away with hurting me? They need to know how I feel. They need to be sorry. They need to apologize with all of the words I need to hear.
When we are hurt it is so easy to question and think in this way. When our heart is broken or our soul crushed at the hand of another suddenly all we can think of is ourselves and vengeance. The fact is that Luke 6:28 is not a request Jesus was making it was a command. In the same teaching He says to the people, ” But love your enemies, do good to them…And you will be children of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” Luke 6:35-36 NIV.
Jesus didn’t say this was an easy thing to do, but He simply told us to do it. One of my spiritual leaders told me, after a crying rant about trying to apply this was, “Don’t try, just do it”. I have learned to apply this to everything. Once I think to myself “I’ll try” I change it to “Just do it”. The truth is we cannot do anything on our own. We need the power of the Holy Spirit. It is His job to counsel and lead us. But He cannot do that unless we have available hearts. Jesus also said in this same chapter, ” A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stores up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” Luke 6:45 NIV.
Christians it is time for us to put aside hurt feelings and senseless arguing and debauchery. Let us exam our actions and speech on a daily basis as we go about our days. Let us put our hearts in check if we find that things that we say and do represent an inner evil instead of the love of God. Cling to prayer and the studying of scripture so that your heart may begin to be good again.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Luke 16:33
Dear Lord, cleanse my heart by the power of Your word. As I take every thought captive and present it to you guide me into love and mercy for others, just as You give to me daily. May I look to the commands of my God with cheer, knowing that as I apply these commands a firm foundation is being built. Help me to always remember who I am in You and that it is my duty to share Your salvation with a dying world. It is Your will, plan, and purpose for me to spread the good news of salvation so that others may be healed and saved just as I have been. Give me strength by the power of Your Spirit to live a life full of love and not offense. Help me not to fall into the concept of offense that runs rampant in our society today. Give me sound thinking and sound words to reflect You every day of my life in every encounter. I love you Lord and I believe this done in Jesus name. Amen.
